ED LEVIN, SHAPING AMERICAN DESIGN SINCE 1950
Ask any fashion designer, and they will tell you that modern and elegant simplicity is in. The flawless, clean look associated with the Ed Levin Collection is exactly why we knew that we wanted to carry these pieces in our store. There's a common misconception that fine jewelry must be intricate and complex. However, one glance at an Ed Levin piece will shatter that notion. While the Ed Levin Collection has become well known around the United States, it had quite a humble beginning.
“Ed Levin, Shaping American Design Since 1950.”
- New York Times (2008)
In the world of fashion design, Ed Levin was truly a modern jewelry pioneer. However, he wasn’t just a jewelry designer; he was an artist in every sense of the word. In fact, Ed was also a craftsperson, painter, sculptor, ceramist, and even invented machines, as well as tools to assist in his creating. While he was all around a creative genius, jewelry was his genuine passion. During the year of 1948, Ed lived in Buenos Aires, Argentina where he studied under a Florentine master jeweler. In 1950, Ed and his wife, Ruth Levin, founded Ed Levin Jewelry. The first years of the business were humble, as they made their jewelry on the stove top of their New York City apartment. Without a brick-and-mortar location, Ed traveled throughout New England via bus selling his pieces to college students until they opened up their first shop in 1953. Since then their headquarters have moved around several times. However, the unique values, creativity, and drive haven’t faded over the decades.
Ed Levin Was The Definition of Passionate Artist
Even as Ed’s jewelry business thrived, he still took the time to enjoy his other artistic pleasures, as creating was his unquenchable desire. There is no doubt that Ed’s passion for his work was the factor that drove his success. To this day, Ed Levin Jewelry Inc. is considered the oldest and largest hand-crafted jewelry manufacturer in the United States. It is with a heavy heart that we inform you that Ed Levin passed away in February of 2008. He was an incredible pioneer for the modern jewelry industry, and he will always be remembered for his elegantly simple, yet captivating work. The Levin family still owns the business today, and they sell to hundreds of retail stores throughout America. He has passed his artistic vision and skills on to the next generation of master artisans who carry on his legacy at Ed Levin Jewelry. They have vowed to continue his work with the same passion, creativity, and determination that gave birth to his collection in 1950.
