HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR JEWELRY

With proper care, our fine jewelry can last a lifetime and look as new as day one.

How to Keep Your Jewelry Clean

When cleaning jewelry, try not to overthink it. A soft brush is often all you need to clean out dirt and dust from the setting. For silver jewelry, use a silver polishing cloth. You don’t always need a silver cleaning solution unless the piece is heavily tarnished or prone to tarnishing. Minor tarnishing can be removed using a cloth soaked with warm water and a few drops of dish soap.

Be careful with cleaners that contain ammonia. It can damage metals and softer gemstones. Ultrasonic cleaners should be avoided unless the gemstone can tolerate the vibration.

How to Properly Store Your Jewelry

Many people store their jewelry in a drawer or box. Some store high-value and rarer items in a safe. No matter where you keep your jewelry, make sure it’s protected. Silver jewelry should be stored in a cool, dry place. We recommend placing it in felt or cloth to separate it from other items. Individual gemstones should be stored in a soft pouch. Contact between diamonds and softer stones can result in the scratching and chipping of valuable gems.

If you’re uncertain how to store all your jewelry and gemstones, contact Jeweler’s Touch. One of our representatives will suggest options, such as a jewelry box.

How to Care for Diamond and Colored Stones

Diamonds do last forever. But this rings true only if you properly care for them. Skin oils, residue from cosmetic products, and debris can irritate your skin, discolor metal, and damage stones. Diamonds and most gemstones can be cleaned with warm water and dish soap. Use a soft cotton cloth or soft-bristle toothbrush to clean your jewelry.

At all costs, avoid:

  • Lotions that make a diamond appear dull.
  • Wearing diamond jewelry in a chlorinated pool or hot tub.
  • Cleaning a diamond with household cleansers/sanitizers.

Diamonds should also not be touched directly. You’ll smudge the stone and diminish its fire and luster.

How to Enhance a Gemstone’s Color and Clarity

Depending on the stone, the proper steps for cleaning and polishing it may differ. There are many types of gemstones, each with a specific level of hardness and other properties. At Jeweler’s Touch, we recommend cleaning most gems with a soft, damp cloth. Contact us and read our additional resources on how to care for your diamond and gemstone jewelry.
