The Difference Between Lab Grown Diamonds and Earth-Mined Diamonds

Posted on Thursday, August 15th, 2019 at 3:33 pm by Ad

We are going to dig deep below the surface to unearth the facts and opinions surrounding lab grown diamonds versus earth-mined diamonds. Can man-made diamonds even hold a candle to earth-mined diamonds? From quality, to clarity, down to how they are created and sourced. There are some factors to consider before choosing sides.

Contrary to what people may think, earth-mined diamonds do not come from coal. Natural diamonds are each unique and most of them pre-date the first land plants, which is the source material for coal. That in and of itself should be enough confirmation to dispel the myth that diamonds come from coal.

Some gemologists would argue that earth-mined diamonds have a certain ‘je ne sais quoi’ and indescribable mystique that simply can’t be recreated in a laboratory. Earth-mined diamonds are quite the coveted extravagance, not to mention a lasting symbol of love and courtship. But you shouldn’t be quick to disparage the modern version of a natural diamond. There are some perks, like price and sustainability, that grab the attention of diamond aficionados both old and new.

What is the Difference Between Lab Grown Diamonds & Earth-Mined Diamonds?

The most obvious difference between the two is that one is created deep below the Earth’s surface, and the other is scientifically manufactured in a lab. As cool as the thought of ‘3D printing’ and mass-producing diamonds may seem, what happens below the surface of the Earth is far more impressive.

Creating diamonds in a lab is still a fairly new technology, but it’s growing in popularity, especially amongst millennials. The composition is identical to that of earth-mined diamonds, but the methods in which they are derived differs greatly. There are two different methods for farming lab grown diamonds that look like earth-mined diamonds. One is the High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) and the other is CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition). The quality is continually increasing, and to the naked eye you wouldn’t have a clue you are looking at a manufactured creation.

  • Price. The price tag of a diamond is one of the most significant factors when you are comparing lab grown diamonds to earth-mined diamonds. The abyss between the two is vast. It is no mystery that the cost of earth-mined diamonds far surpasses that of synthetic diamonds. The man power alone is outlandish. Excavating these treasures takes enormous effort and resources, which greatly increases the dollar amount. Like their organic counterpart, artificial diamonds are graded according to the four C’s (Carat Weight, Cut, Color, Clarity), but they are still priced about 30-40% under natural diamonds.
  • Value. This is another important facet to consider, and one that may not be in favor of lab grown diamonds. Whether you personally agree with it or not, the value of a earth-mined diamond is quite the tangible constant. The manufacturing of synthetic diamonds is only increasing, meaning the market has no discernible cap, which hinders long-term stability. If you are looking for long-term value, natural diamonds are the way to go hands-down.
  • Sustainability. Sustainability and ethical mining practices are at the top of the priority list for younger generations. While not all earth-mined diamonds are tied to human suffering, there have been many accounts of human rights’ abuses at the hands of the diamond trade with brutal mining practices still found in some parts of the world. Jeweler’s Touch only sells ethically sourced earth-mined diamonds, or we make our own conflict-free diamonds. When you buy a lab grown diamond, which to the naked eye doesn’t differ from the earth-mined thing, you are ensuring that no one was harmed in the process.
